Address: Barnhill Poorhouse

Glasgow
Note: In the past, tuberculosis was called consumption, because it seemed to consume people from within, with a bloody cough, fever, pallor, and long relentless wasting. Other names included phthisis, Greek for "consumption" and phthisis pulmonalis.
Note: The Barnhill Poorhouse, had also opened at Springburn in 1850. Paupers who could not support themselves were sent here by the Parish and were obliged to work at jobs such as bundling firewood, picking oakum (separating tarred rope fibres) and breaking rocks. In 1905 the Glasgow Poorhouse in Townhead closed and its inmates went to Barnhill, making it the largest poorhouse in Scotland. In 1945 it was renamed Foresthall House and Hospital and was thereafter used as a geriatric hospital and residential home. It was demolished in the late 1980s and a private housing development now stands on the site.

Note

Can't find his birth or bap cert.

All the censuses point to a DOB of 1848/49 in Glasgow. As there are so many items pointing to about this date and place I believe them to be accurate.

I have searched Scotlands People website for all sorts of name variations including searching outside Glasgow with no luck. I have seen other people on message boards saying they have similar problems with other surnames around these dates in Glasgow so perhaps the records are simply missing.

In a way it doesn't matter as I have found his parents despite the lack of birth record.

By 1871 I believe he had moved from Glasgow to Belfast as he was not in the 1871 Scottish census. He married his wife in Belfast in April 1873 and their first child was born 4 months later also in Belfast. They then moved over to Workington, England. Their next and subsequent children being born there from 1875 onwards.

His name is given as Duggart on the marriage certificate. The only time I have ever seen this spelling. A good clue perhaps as to how he pronounced his name.
